Development Programs - Honduras
As the continuation of the Character Education program begun through Zoom in June through October of 2022, Y Service Club of North Jersey, from November 8 until November 14 had indeed a very busy week. President Danial Mohan met together with Secretary Carol Pobanz and Mario Salinas, past present of Y Service of Tegucigalpa, Honduras in the city of Tela to hold a three-day Character Education workshop, which then graduated and certified 73 teachers.
WHY CHARACTER EDUCATION?
Research has shown educators something that every parent already knows—children do not naturally and automatically know how to make good choices in their social and emotional behaviors, at school, at home, and in the community. They need explicit education and support in order to become good citizens. They also need role models beginning with their primary educators, their parents. As they move out from the home and into the community they need teachers, coaches and community leaders who model good character. The goal of character education in schools is to provide students with an environment that promotes universal values and helps children make good life choices.
Seventy Three Teachers Graduated on November 14, 2022
This program, titled “Honduran Dream,” is focused on helping the city to prepare its citizenry, from childhood to adulthood, to understand and take the necessary steps to become a serving city – a successful tourist city. Besides providing the teacher training, the workshop encouraged the participants to create a national vision – not to look toward the United States and the “North American Dream,” but rather to develop a vision that celebrates the good of their own nation. Participants represented approximately 100 schools.
The advancement of Character Education in Tela is in fact a work in progress. The program cannot move forward without the support of at least some core group of teachers. Seventy-three teachers were trained. From that group, we are looking for the leaders among them to integrate character development into their everyday instructions. During this next year, we will be providing education materials, examples of curriculum and providing other educational ideas on how to advance the education and daily awareness of living a virtuous life.

X-Ray Machines for Rural Hospitals - India
The Rev. George Mathen Mission Hospital (GMM Hospital) was founded in September 1971 by the Holy Immanuel CSI (Church of South India) church Mallappally, a congregation in the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese – a hospital commemorating the life of Rev. George Mathen (1819 – 1870), who was the first native priest of the Anglican Church and who labored hard to uplift the downtrodden and develop the Malayalam language and education.
This is a rural mission hospital serving mainly rural people. It caters to a population belonging to low-income groups, who are daily wage earners, migrant laborers, and lower-middle-class farmers. Included is care off of the premises, such as homecare for bedridden people. They provide care to marginalized communities by organizing community clinics and other community health programs, and by organizing educational and counseling programs for youth, children, and laborers on preventive health, hygiene, alcoholism, lifestyle hazards, etc.
Its administration is vested with the Rev. George Mathen Medical Mission Charitable Society which is duly constituted and registered according to the societies act of the Government of Kerala. Over the years, the hospital has grown from humble beginnings to a 30-bed secondary-level hospital. Having been made aware of a need for equipment at George Mathen Memorial Hospital, in Kerala, India, monies contributed to Y Service Club North Jersey will be made available for the purchase of a Digital X-Ray Unit.
